2004-2007 Deputy Minister of Finance responsible for The General Accounting and Budget Office, State Land Holdings, Sovereign Debt Management Dept., European Funds Audit Dept., International Economic Affairs Dept., and all investment and share-holdings of the Hellenic Republic. Within that three-year period, we reduced budget deficit from 8.2% to 3.3%, improved the Republic’s credit rating, managed to borrow for 30- and 50-year periods at 0,30% over Bunds and at the same cost as Italy, effectively engaging in the first ‘restructuring’ of Greek State debt!
Also drafted legislation for the new Directorate of Internal Economic Audits, on the uses of lands around Greece’s coastal perimeter and a host of other.
Also actively engaged in the very successful privatization of Hellenic Petroleum, of The Commercial Bank of Greece (to Credit Agricole of France) and of OTE Hellenic Telecom (to Deutsche Telekom)!
2007-2009 Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs responsible of all international economic relations. We commenced an unprecedented initiative for State visits (with the President of the Republic or organized directly by my office) to promote Greek businesses’ access to the world markets.
CAPITAL PARTNERS
In 1996 we started-up with Mr. Thanassis Tsoukalas, Capital Partners SA, an M&A and investment banking advisory firm. Soon, Capital Partners became the leader in banking acquisition initiation and execution, acting as Lead Advisors in the sale ofChase Manhattan Greece, Chase Manhattan Romania, Credit Lyonnais Greece, Bank of Athens, Bank of Nova Scotia Greece, National Westminster Bank Greece, and Kerdoos Hermes stockbrokerage. These were sold through us to other Banks or group of investors. Also we acted as Senior Advisors for the listing of Kathimerini SA Publishing Group on the Athens Stock Exchange.
